![]() ![]() ![]() Jupiter 4 and Seventeen touch on feelings of regret, wasting your time, wasting your youth it all comes from a very personal place. It’s an album about change, something that Van Etten experienced a lot of since her last album she got a degree, pursued acting for a while, and, most importantly, gave birth to her first child while writing these songs. She talks so openly about relationships opening and closing, often back to back (see tracks one and two). The songs are about getting older, growing closer to new people, and growing away from others. Sharon sounds ambitious and adventurous without abandoning the singer-songwriter style that she was already very good at.Ībove the music, though, the lyrics on this album are what really resonated with me. These bright and dark sounds really compliment each other, and her variety of sounds throughout the album are spread out in a way that makes the album really compelling the whole way through (honestly, the slow-fast-slow sequencing also works really well here). On songs like Memorial Day and Jupiter 4, though, she explores darker synth sounds and less straightforward methods of songwriting. When the first chorus came in, it became clear that she was focusing on catchier songwriting and higher production, and I was all for it. She takes her time introducing the listener to her new, slightly more electronic style, but the album doesn’t really start until the rapid drum machines enter at the beginning of No One’s Easy to Love. The piano, her growly, low voice, a fuzzy bass synth, and harmonies all slowly overlapped before the drums kicked in to start the album with a really nice, but really slow opener. ![]() When I first put on the first song, I Told You Everything, it right away embodied everything I like about Sharon Van Etten. Even though none of her full albums really connected with me, I was still really excited to listen to Remind Me Tomorrow. So if you’ve never listened to Sharon Van Etten, she has a lot of really great songs like Serpents (both versions), Every Time the Sun Comes Up, and End of the World. ![]()
