![]() They are, sort of, in that you have rocks and sky and ocean, but Big Sur is Cornwall on steroids - higher cliffs, more forested, fewer farms and pastures, no industrial landscape. Ives (on my fourth visit) and don't think Big Sur and Cornwall are all that similar. >We are very fortunate to have spent many vacations in Cornwall which is a similar kind of scenery<< That’s a big chunk of time and California is full of so many things to see and do!! You don’t make it easy for us tourists to choose!! ![]() The scenery is obviously beautiful or it wouldn’t attract so many visitors -but if we visit point lobos will we have missed out to not drive the coast road too? We have been advised to allow 5 hours to drive from Monterey to mcway falls and back and enjoy it properly. I don’t know whether to save big sur for a trip when it’s just me and my husband in our retirement when the road will be reopened and we can enjoy it at leisure without kids in tow while also knowing we are driving TO somewhere so there is less pressure for the views to live up to the hype. We are very fortunate to have spent many vacations in Cornwall which is a similar kind of scenery (google poldark Cornwall images for examples if you haven’t been) so I wonder if the children will appreciate the scenery or will find it all familiar and therefore not as good a use of our time as exploring areas which are totally different experiences for them I have 4 children age 10-16 and just wonder whether we will drive down to mcway falls and they will wonder what we drove all that way for. We are planning a few hours in point lobos another day (as general reviews seem to rate this as fabulous scenery and we can cut the visit short if the children have had enough) and we are also heading to pebble beach for an anniversary dinner so could spend a little more time exploring 17 mile drive perhaps? ![]() We are travelling down the west coast from SF to la and part of this was to experience Big Sur.Īfter booking our vacation we found out about the road closures but just shrugged and took the advice to plan to drive from Monterey to Mcway falls and back to see some of the best parts before heading inland round the diversion for our journey south.Īs our planning progressed however I am wondering whether to cut out the drive down big sur. I am nervous posting this as I don’t want to offend anyone so please dont shoot me down!! □ I am simply trying to narrow down the attractions in CA which will make best use of our limited time. ![]()
